CURRICULUM VITAE
Born in 1938, he studied Economics and Sociology at the University of Munich, Germany. He obtained his first degree (Dipl. Oec. Publ.) in 1963, his second degree (Postgraduate in "Oststudien" (Eastern European Studies) in 1966. In 1968 he did his doctoral thesis on "Social production and economic rationality - External effects and central planning in the socialist economic system" (Published in German by Europäische Verlagsanstalt Frankfurt / Wien 1969). From 1968 to 1970 he was a lecturer (Assistance Professor) at the University in Erlangen-Nuremberg .
From 1970 until 2004 he was University-Professor for Political Economy and International Political Economy at the Free University Berlin, department of Political Science (Otto-Suhr-Institut). In the 1980s and in the 1990s he was Dean of the department. Since the 1980s he was a visiting-professor at the Universidade Federal do Pará in Belém, Brasil, at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (Unidades Xochimilco and Azcapotzalco) in Mexico City, at the New School for Social Research in New York, N.Y., at York University of Toronto, Canada, at the UNESP of Sao Paulo, Brasil, at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and at the Universidade Estadual de Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).
He gave lectures and seminars at many universities in Europe, in Asia (India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand, South Korea, Japan), Africa (Senegal, Namibia, RSA), Arabe countries ( Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia, Egypt), Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela), in Russia and Kazakhstan and in North America (USA and Canada).
He carried out research projects on the limits of globalization, on the globalization of human (in)security, on the challenges of European integration and the European Currency Union, on the economic and political preconditions of a transition towards renewable energy. He also participated in numerous research projects on European trade unions, on the social, political and ecological implications of development projects in the Brazilian Amazon (the empirical case study was on the "Projeto Grande Carajás"), on the interrelation of informalization of work, money and politics with special emphasis on the Mexican situation. From 2009 to 2012 he participated in a research project sponsored by the Austrian Energy and Climate Fund on the impact of the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy (biomass) in different patterns of land use in Europe, Latin America and southern Africa. He c ollaborated in a research project on "Europe as a power of peace" (Friedensmacht Europa) carried out by the Austrian Center for Peace Research and Conflict Resolution” in Stadtschlaining/Burgenland sponsored by the Austrian government.
His main publications were concentrated on the systemic crisis of capitalism, on economic, social, political and ecological aspects of globalization and global governance, on the relationship between capitalist accumulation and economic growth, on the theory and strategies of development, especially in the Brazilian Amazon, on the process of European integration and its crisis, on trade union policy in Europe, on renewable energies and the spatial reorganization of the world economy.
In recent years, he published several books such as: “Der große Krach oder die Jahrhundertkrise von Wirtschaft und Finanzen, Politik und Natur” (The great secular crisis of economics and finance, politics and nature), Westfälisches Dampfboot Münster 2010; Marx neu entdecken (Rediscover Marx), VSA-publishers Hamburg 2012; Vermessung der Utopie (Surveying Utopia, together with Raúl Zelik), completely new edition, bertz + fischer publishers, Berlin 2015; Engels neu entdecken. Das hellblaue Bändchen zur Einführung in die 'Dialektik der Natur' und die Kritik von Akkumulation und Wachstum, (Rediscover Engels), VSA publishers Hamburg 2015. Numerous periodic publications in German and other daily. weekly or monthly European journals (see in this webpage Books, Articles, and Selection of Conferences).
He was honored in 2010 by the organization "Eurosolar" with the "Solar Prize" and in 2013 by the Government of the Land of Salzburg, Austria, with the “Robert-Jung”-Peace Prize.
From 1971 to 2007 he was co-editor of the social science quarterly "PROKLA” (first: Problems of Class Strugge, later, Journal of Critical Social Sciences"). For many years, until his death he engaged himself in the International Lelio Basso Foundation for the Rights and Libration of Peoples, as its Vice President he participated as a member of the jury of the "Permanent Peoples´ Tribunal".
From 1999-2002 he coordinated the working group on "financial markets" of the German parliament´s “Enquete Commission” dealing with globalisation and the world economy. He was also a member of the Scientific Council of ATTAC Germany, member of the Leibniz-Societät der Wissenschaften, founding member of the Institute of Solidarity and Modernity. Since 2008 he engaged himself as Associate Member of the Institute of International Political Economy at the Berlin School of Economics and Law. He was a long-term member of the international publishing board of the "Socialist Register" yearbook and the "Historical Materialism" magazine. He was a founding member of the German “Green Party”, but left the party due to its decision to support the war against Afganistan and in 2007 joined the newly founded party “THE LEFT”.
He supported the research of hundreds of students at all levels and of researchers during his lifetime, particularly at the Free University of Berlin.
Since October 2004 he was retired professor emeritus at the Free University of Berlin.

Academia, Activism & Alternatives: strategies for politicising ecology. Prof. Elmar Altvater (Emeritus FU Berlin, Academic Adviser Attac Germany) gave this lecture at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin on June 1. As part of the ENTITLE Course on "Navigating Work Opportunities", the lecture discusses the responsibilities of academic-activists in the epoch of the anthropocene, or better, capitalocene. It provides food for thought for young researchers and activists seeking to politicse ecology.
